Student Services

VIC’s Student Services deparment is here to ensure that your transition to Canada and life in Vancouver are comfortable. Some of the services we offer are outlined below. Just let us know if you need help with anything else!

The Homestay Program at VIC is an excellent way to improve your English, meet new people, and earn about Canada and Canadian culture. For more information and pictures, see our Homestay page.

Minor children who are less than 19 years of age and come to British Columbia to study without a parent or legal guardian must be cared for by a responsible adult in Canada. This person is known as a custodian. Custodianship requires that legal arrangements be made to give the custodian in Canada permission to act in place of a parent. Two notarized documents are required. An immigration officer must be satisfied that adequate arrangements have been made for the care and support of minor children who travel to Canada to study.

For students who do not have relatives living in British Columbia, VIC can help to find a suitable custodian.

Airport Pickup

We can arrange to pick you up at the airport upon your arrival in Vancouver. Our student services representative will greet you at the airport with your name on a sign and take you directly to your homestay or other selected accomodations. This popular service provides an excellent introduction to Vancouver and allows for a smooth transition to your new home.

If you have requested an airport pick-up, please be sure to inform us of your flight number so that we are aware of any changes to your itinerary.

For pricing information, please fee the Fees page.

Health Insurance

It is mandatory for every student at Vancouver International College to purchase medical insurance for the duration of their stay in Canada. Private medical insurance is provided to VIC students by Johnson Fu Insurance. For more information about coverage, see the Benefit Summary. It is provided at a rate of roughly CAD $1.50 per day, or a yearly rate of CAD $520.00.

It is recommended that students sign up for medical insurance before arriving in Canada. Students can fill out the form provided by VIC and we will forward it to the insurance provider. Coverage will be in effect the day the student arrives in Canada. Students who do not have medical insurance when they arrive must purchase it on their first day at VIC from the Accounting Office. The processing time is 24 hours so coverage will begin the next day.

Transit Passes (GoCards)

A GoCard allows students to travel across Metro Vancouver by bus, SkyTrain, SeaBus or West Coast Express for a reduced price – Concession Fare instead of Regular Fare. For more information about fares, see the TransLink website.

To be eligible for a GoCard you must be a student that is between 14 and 19 years old who lives in Metro Vancouver and attends classes full time in a public or private school between Grades 8 and 12.

VIC Student Services will assist eligible students in applying for a GoCard.
